Defective Medical Devices & Dangerous Drugs
Plaintiffs have filed an estimated 18,000 lawsuits in federal and state courts against Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson for injuries stemming from Xarelto. Xarelto is a blood thinner medication that can cause life-threatening internal hemorrhaging or bleeding that cannot be reversed. If you or a loved one has experienced medical problems as a result of taking Xarelto, contact Cooper Law Partners for a free case review. You may be entitled to file a Xarelto lawsuit to recover medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
What is Xarelto
Xarelto is an anticoagulant and blood thinner medication that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. The drug is designed to prevent blood clots and is prescribed to people with a common heart rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation. It is also used to treat and reduce the risk of pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis. Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer AG and marketed in the U.S. by Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceutical subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation are often prescribed this medication because it can significantly reduce the risk of stroke. The medication can also help prevent blood clots in patients who have undergone knee and hip replacements.
Many victims contend that Xarelto is unreasonably dangerous because, unlike some other blood thinner medications, there is no known antidote to reverse its effects in the event of severe and uncontrollable bleeding. Victims also claim that Bayer and Johnson & Johnson were negligent because they failed to disclose the severe and potentially fatal risks associated with using Xarelto.
Xarelto Risks and Side Effects
Like any other blood thinner, Xarelto can cause bleeding. The primary difference between Xarelto and similar medications, and what makes Xarelto so dangerous, is that the effects of Xarelto cannot be reversed if uncontrolled bleeding occurs. Because of this, patients taking this drug are at a higher level of risk for bleeding to death. Although numerous patients take Xarelto and experience little or no side effects, many other patients have experienced severe, life-threatening side effects after taking Xarelto. Xarelto injuries and side effects may include:
- Uncontrollable bleeding
- Pulmonary embolism
- Hemorrhagic stroke
- Wrongful death
- Intracranial hemorrhaging
- Vitreous hemorrhage (eye bleeding)
- Stomach bleeding,
- Gastrointestinal bleeding,
- Wound infections
- Inhibited clotting
- Back Pain
- Swollen or bleeding gums
- Bloody or tar-like stools
- Reduced bladder and bowel functioning
- Bloody urine
- Coughing or vomiting blood
- Red, brown or copper colored urine
- Excessive bruising
- Serious allergic reactions
- Leg or ankle swelling
- Reduction in hemoglobin
- Cerebrovascular complications
- Shortness of breath
According to a 2016 study by The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), a non-profit organization “devoted entirely to medication error prevention and safe medication use,” Xarelto was responsible for more adverse events 2015 than any other of the 1,395 identifiable drugs ISMP monitors. The study also showed that in 2015:
- Xarelto accounted for 10,674 reports of fatal, disabling, and serious injury in the U.S.
- 1,121 Xarelto related deaths were reported
- More than 80% of the Xarelto complications reported to the FDA involved hemorrhaging
- Blood clots or embolism made up about 11% of the reports
Depressingly, these figures are probably much lower than the actual number of Xarelto adverse events. Experts estimate that only about 10% of drug adverse events that occur are actually reported to the FDA. Either way, as these numbers demonstrate, Xarelto is unusually dangerous.
The thousands of lawsuits filed against Bayer and Johnson & Johnson allege that the companies knew that Xarelto was defective yet continued to market it as a viable alternative to traditional blood thinners like warfarin. The lawsuits go on to allege that the companies:
- Failed to disclose risks of bleeding with Xarelto
- Wrongfully marketed Xarelto as a superior blood thinning medication to other blood thinner medications
- Deceived the public about the drug’s convenience and benefits to increase sales
- Failed to conduct appropriate clinical trials on the effects of Xarelto on humans before starting marketing efforts
- Concealed their knowledge of the link between Xarelto and bleeding
